John Connolly

Principal, Creative Director

As creative director, John is responsible for creating and managing ongoing brand expressions for clients. John thrives on the challenge of communicating complex bodies of information through clear, creative solutions across a range of media. He is obsessed (in a good way) with typography and information design.

Prior to founding IOP, John worked as a design director at Red Sky/Belk Mignogna Associates; a senior designer at Design, Writing, Research; an art director and designer of Architecture magazine; and a senior art director, identity and online applications, at CKS Partners. John also assisted in design and research of Edward Tufte's Visual Explanations. He has designed, directed and managed projects ranging from identity design and brand communications to annual reports for clients such as Cognizant, New York University, PaineWebber, Texaco, Englehard and Vivendi Universal. John's work has been recognized by the AIGA, The AR100, ID, and the Strathmore Paper Company. John is a current member of the AIGA.

John also preaches what he practices by convincing 19 year-olds to be passionate about the foundation of graphic design and typography at the The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where he earned his undergraduate degree. John received his MFA in graphic design from Yale University. He is a native of Canton, Massachusetts.
